we are family: the second half

When my brother was in town, we finished off Saturday with drinks on the rooftop at SoHo House, then walked the High Line at sunset and had dinner at a diner.

On Sunday, we enjoyed a barbeque and games at Prospect Park with a bunch of friends

On Monday, Ted and I took a whirlwind tour of Columbus Circle, Central Park and Chinatown before heading back to the airport in the late afternoon.

how sweet

we are family: begin at the beginning

My brother came to visit me for a long weekend starting early morning last Friday!
Friday was spent wandering through a humid LES, then drinks in midtown, then a fancy steak and babyback rib dinner at Quality Meats.
Saturday we went to SoHo for some delicious knishes at Yonah Shimel's, some poking around the vintage furniture, and some shopping on Broadway. Then we headed to SoHo House where D had the hookup, and enjoyed some breezy summer cocktails by the rooftop pool. After that, it was burgers, shakes and salty salads at a classic New York diner!
To be continued for Sunday and Monday's adventures....

Persimmon Lunch

Last Friday Tom and I enjoyed a terrific tofu dressing- and cucumber kimchi- making demonstration and a tasting lunch at Persimmon with Chef Youngsun Lee. Some of you might remember that I took a kimchi making course from Youngsun last year at ICE. This was closed lunch service was also one of their offerings, and well worth the money! We indulged in 4 "small plates" (the highlight for me was the deep fried Chinese eggplant in a tofu, lime and Korean miso dressing as well as the salted napa cabbage, radish kimchi and braised pork belly rolls), one large entree each (of course I chose the kimchi jji gae!), a lovely summery dessert of a flan-like ginger tofu in a white wine and honey glaze, and tasted two different rice wines, along with lightly sweet traditional Korean sweet snacks (I'm hooked on the spongy, chewy sweet potato cake!) and an iced roasted barley/corn tea. Delicious! I'll definitely be going back for dinner service soon.

Adventure in the midwest

I had a great getaway to Detroit and Chicago last week, after some very busy months at work. This was my first trip to the midwest. The scenery was beautiful, the people were friendly, and it was fascinating to see practically vacant Detroit. All-in-all, I had an amazing time with the best travel companion there is.
