juice clease, day 2

Day 2 of my juice cleanse has so far been much smoother than Day 1. I have had only mild bloating so far and very little need to rush to the bathroom. I'm feeling happy and more clear-headed, though a little sleep deprived.... I never have trouble sleeping, and last night was no different at first, but at 1 am I woke up and could not get back to sleep. I'd read online that many people have trouble sleeping.

This morning I started my juices much earlier, having lemon water beginning at 5:45 am and my first juice at 6:15, before my commute into work. At work I had a splash of yesterday's #6 juice, the vanilla cashew milk, in green tea and two glasses of water. No headache! I really love that cashew milk, though I couldn't finish my serving last night -- it was so rich and I felt I needed a little protein boost this morning. Kelly at Juice Hugger told me this is not cheating, so away we go!

At around 9:00 I started in on my second juice -- the one that yesterday induce all kinds of "detox" activity inappropriate for the workplace. This time I drank it verrry slowly - over an hour - and alternated with sips of water. Still no headache and only very slight stomach bloating and movement.

It's now 1:00 and I'm halfway done with my 3rd juice, which is a delicious tomato one that can be drunk warm. (Yesterday I did the Love Cleanse and today I'm doing the Clarity Cleanse, and tomorrow, I'l do the Happiness Cleanse. This was suggested by the folks at Juice Hugger as a way to keep the cleanse interesting, and I think it's a great idea.) It's a thin soup, really, and nice and salty and savory. A nice change from the others! I am taking it slowly and again taking sips of water in between, wary after yesterday's experience.

Day 1, PM update:

Wow, I did not expect to feel or experience the things I did today on the cleanse. I was told the second and/or third days are the worst in terms of symptoms of expelling toxins, so I'm not sure if it's hitting me more quickly than most, or if I have even more of a hurdle ahead of me in the coming days. I'm feeling bloated and the activity in my stomach has been constant. I've been visiting the restroom about every 20 minutes, and at one point in the early afternoon I almost thought I couldn't continue the cleanse while still working because it was so disruptive (...and erruptive -- sorry if TMI). It's now 4:30 and I've finished my 4th juice (a pineapple ginger dealy) and somehow feel a little more settled. I still have a mild headache and keep forgetting that I'm not eating food while on the cleanse. I haven't eaten anything but the notion to order a salad or grab an apple keeps coming to mind.

I'm doing my very first juice cleanse, starting today. I'm excited to see and feel the differences this will make. After being in Argentina and Uruguay, the holidays, and winter eating habits, I felt a little weighed-down from all the meat-focused meals I've been eating. While I also have some healthy habits, such as starting every day with oatmeal and eating lots of leafy greens and whole grains, I'm hoping this cleanse will help me reset my eating habits and cravings. I'm drinking 6 vegetable juices daily over 5 days from this great place that recently opened around the corner, along with tons of lemon water and green tea. I thought I'd record my experience here. So,

Day 1, AM:

I got up a bit late today and so only had time for 1 cup of hot lemon water before leaving, whereas I usually have a bowl of oatmeal with honey, homemade yogurt, blueberries and flax seed, and a cup and a half of coffee with whole milk. Felt fine until around 8:30 at my desk at the office, when I noticed a dull headache. Drank more hot lemon water, and at 9:00 started in on my first juice, a kale, apple, etc. blend. Still had the headache and realized I had no caffeine yet, so made myself a large mug of green tea, then downed a glass of plain water. I started feeling mildly hungry and noticed some stomach growling. At 11:00 I opened up my second juice, a goji berry green tea, and added some psyllium husk for fiber. I instantly realized I should have had this one earlier in the day, as it made me feel full and totally satisfied even before drinking half. This one took me around 35 minutes to finish, then I followed up with a tall glass of lemon water.

I am noticing a lot of activity in my stomach, which is promising. I also feel a bit dreamy and shaky. I didn't expect that my body would notice the difference between my normal routine and the cleanse this quickly. I am also realizing how much I think about sweet snacks in the late morning, and how many are readily available in the office. I've already been offered peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cookies and a chai latte.

Yesterday we took the Metro North train up to White Plains to visit the Donald Kendall Sculpture Gardens at the Pepsico headquarters. The air was crisp and spicy, the way it only gets in fall. We got coffees and Magnolia cupcakes for the train ride, and packed a picnic for the garden.

It was one of the first weekend days we've had free of obligations or chores to get our new condo in order, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

On the ride home we got a few more timelines and lists together in preparation for our wedding this December.

Sanford Biggers told a story about a defining moment early in his career that moved me to tears because of his earnest intent.

Let’s assume autism has always existed. Let’s take an even greater leap and assume that Mr. Wiltshire’s type of autism—a natural ability to perfectly reproduce images from memory in three dimensions—has always been around. Rare, but there.

If we look at the earliest examples of art, we see a sort of melding of the symbolic and the representational: stick figures, an approximation of the shapes of people, of animals, of things. And suffice it to say, this is art; even to the modern eye, exquisite. To the people who made it and those who first laid eyes on it, some of that art must have captured imaginations and inspired awe.

So where would Stephen’s ability have fit in at that time? Is it possible we might not have even understood it until we had made the collective mental leap to 3D representation (centuries later)? Could it have even existed? If it did exist—as talent, or impulse—surely the person who carried it was more than a little frustrated; even if they did have the tools to make the images, they would quickly learn they had no audience.

This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.

Minimalism is as noncommittal as fashion gets without leaving a body naked.
At its best, minimalist fashion is like Mission-style oak furniture: inviting, architectural, sturdy, elegant. At worst, it's plain. It can put demands on the wearer. It won't inspire your friends to apply adjectives to you that you couldn't inspire alone. A minimalist dress is the only $2,000 one that you might wear to meet the Dalai Lama without feeling obscene.

What sets the minimalists on this page above the rest is their deceit and their conceit. Deceit because these clothes look so simple but can in fact be the most difficult: many are cut on the bias (diagonlly, across the grain of the fabric). The bias cut makes them drape. The conceit is the richness of the fabric. There is nothing plain about chiffon backed with silk, or cashmere woven into the rib knit of a sweater.

Minimalism is best described not by what it is, but by what it lacks. There's no lace. No tulle. No fringe. No flouncy tiers. No rows of pleats. For those who subscribe, it is defined the way obscenity ofter is: they know it when they see it.

We spent the Fourth of July holiday weekend locally in Brooklyn. The city is very quiet on these long summer weekends, with lots of people retreating to beach or country homes.

On the 4th, we took the A train to Rockaway Beach -- our first time there. The area is getting a lot of attention lately with their Rockaway concessions, and no denying,

that's what brought us out there. We had a beautiful day all-around, though. I doubt I'll ever get totally used to crowded beaches after growing up visiting the foggy beaches of the Oregon coast, but I am learning to appreciate this kind of beach life too.

Sang Lee Farms visit

We've been proud members of the Crown Heights CSA now for a little over a full year, purchasing shares in both the regular 2010 and 2011 seasons, as well as the winter 2010 season. Back in May we got to visit the organic farm that produces all the food for our CSA, Sang Lee Farms, along with other members of our branch of the CSA, as well as a few people from the DUMBO branch.

Barcelona: upon arrival

Two weeks ago we went on vacation in Barcelona -- my first time there, but it won't be my last.

This first hotel we stayed in was half a block from Place de Catalunya, where most of the protesting for political and economic reform is happening in Barcelona. We walked around and took a few shots, though everything was pretty quiet (unlike the day before, when police became violent with protesters).

After our stroll, we headed to the hotel's rooftop terrace to kick off vacation with delicious tapas. Near the end of our peaceful dinner, we heard a din starting down below, only to realize that Barcelona's soccor team beat Manchester, and people were celebrating in the streets. What an experience! I'm not much of a sports fan, but I couldn't help get swept away by the crowds joy. People were singing, climbing up lamp posts, cheering, etc. until the wee hours. What a welcoming!

After examining my friend's vintage beige mohair turban that her aunt knitted, I realized how easily I could make one on my own. I also remembered 1.5 balls of vintage beige mohair that had been languishing in my stash yarn since I first learned to knit -- I'd come across a great bag of yarn leftovers at Goodwill while thrifting one day in college, and grabbed it for a few dollars, telling myself that one day I'd know how to use the stuff. Mission accomplished!

Quick & Easy Lotion

Julie asked what recipe I used when making my lotion the other night, and the answer is...I don't remember where I got the recipe. Sorry! But I can tell you, it was the simplest set of instructions and I emailed myself the gist of it and just followed along:

First off, I had two big bottles of oil I bought at Madina in downtown Brooklyn. They have an online store! So easy. For the last year I've been using dribbles of the plain oil to moisturize my overly dry hands and shins. I use Sweet Almond Oil and Jojoba. From these, I measured out a 1/2 cup blend of the two and put it in a double boiler on the stovetop.

Then I shaved roughly 2 tablespoons of beeswax off a 1 pound brick I bought online (although you can easily buy beeswax at your local farmer's market), and tipped that into the oil in the double boiler.

I watched, gently stirring for about 10 minutes as the wax shavings melted into the oil. Careful not to douse yourself in hot oil and wax! Then, I turned off the heat on the stove and kept stirring the oil/wax mixture with a whisk while slowly drizzling 1/2 cup of distilled water into the bowl. Each time water hit the hot mixture, the oil and wax hardened a little and it became easier to whisk with more intensity.

Once all the water was added, I continued to whisk the mixture for about 10 minutes until the blend met my desired consistency. To finish it off, I put a few drops of peppermint oil in the bowl and whisked it until fully incorporated. Then I used a spatula to fill two small wide-mouth containers (I used Lush soap tins) with the lotion, and stored in my bathroom.

Note:
I've been using the lotion every morning in lieu of the plain oil, and it is so much easier to apply/spread. Also, it seems that it absorbs into my skin more quickly, and I don't feel nearly as greasy. I'd love to try making lotion again, and maybe next time I'll try getting a little fancier with the scents I add. I may also try whipping the mixture a bit longer over a very controlled, low heat, because I notice that some of the distilled water separated from my lotion after a few days of sitting. I may also try adding slightly more wax next time to help everything set.

Another note:
The wax is so annoying to try to clean off a good knife, so use a craft knife or maybe a thrifted cheese grater or something you won't use on food to shave your 2 tablespoons of beeswax. Or! Buy the granulated beeswax from your local bee keeper. :)

According to my iPhone, it's going to snow tonight and tomorrow in New York City. It's certainly been cold enough around here. Our landlord has cranked up the heat accordingly, which I'm grateful for, except when it comes to dry sinuses and skin each morning. I whipped up this radiator humidifier this evening out of an old rum (?) bottle and some cotton yarn, which I crocheted freeform around the glass. I'm kind of in love with the way it looks, cobwebby and imperfect like a Rodarte gown. I'm making another for the bedroom radiator out of a green Jameson bottle and probably a finer golden yellow cotton I have lying around.
