an escape

Last month, the volcanic ash in Iceland precluded our plans to visit Zurich and Barcelona, so we decided to take a restorative trip down to the Dominican Republic instead.  I had just quit my job and would start a new one soon, and being in the caribbean with my man for a week, touring a little and enjoying pina coladas in the heat was the most freeing and calming feeling I'd had in a a while.  What a great trip!

we are family: the second half

When my brother was in town, we finished off Saturday with drinks on the rooftop at SoHo House, then walked the High Line at sunset and had dinner at a diner.

On Sunday, we enjoyed a barbeque and games at Prospect Park with a bunch of friends

On Monday, Ted and I took a whirlwind tour of Columbus Circle, Central Park and Chinatown before heading back to the airport in the late afternoon.

we are family: begin at the beginning

My brother came to visit me for a long weekend starting early morning last Friday!
Friday was spent wandering through a humid LES, then drinks in midtown, then a fancy steak and babyback rib dinner at Quality Meats.
Saturday we went to SoHo for some delicious knishes at Yonah Shimel's, some poking around the vintage furniture, and some shopping on Broadway. Then we headed to SoHo House where D had the hookup, and enjoyed some breezy summer cocktails by the rooftop pool. After that, it was burgers, shakes and salty salads at a classic New York diner!
To be continued for Sunday and Monday's adventures....

Stay at home vacation

I'm off for a week to knit, clean, cook, eat, relax, and most importantly, be with family. I started things off right by baking some white chocolate and cranberry cookies from this recipe and enjoying them along with many knock-out dishes and hot, seasonal libations, at a friend's house in New Jersey.

The rest of the weekend consisted of knitting for my etsy shop, and for Cinder. Here he is modeling his new winter sweater:

Isn't he a natural? Something else very exciting is taking place today, but I'll save that for a later post...!

Mad Men-Inspired Shop Update!

I've added three new items to my etsy shop this evening -- all very Mad Men if you ask me.
Like most people, I really enjoy the clothing on the show, and I happen to own a lot of clothing from the era. What I find really terrific about vintage clothing from this era is that the construction is impeccable, the shapes are very feminine and flattering, and that the separates are incredibly wearable even when paired with contemporary pieces. Case in point, the items pictured above (and just placed in my shop)! I think they work just as well today with a plain black tee and combat boots as they would with a whole vintage outfit.
