cold control

Tonight was one of those magical subway rides home
when I'm overwhelmed with love for New York
and New Yorkers.

Everyone had a miserable day, and was struggling to suppress their
frustration while being in someone's face,
and having someone in their's --

just get where they're going
with limited space; time; means.

Packed in and
giving off steam:
short tugs on a scarf,
strategic throat clearing,
aggressive, padded elbows
& hurried apologies.

"when it gets cold, it gets hot."

To Produce or Not To Produce?

Late last winter and knitted myself the Golden Fleece Cowl.

I just finished a Pewter Fleece Cowl for my friend, as a commission.
The question is, do I start producing these for my etsy shop?

New Shop Venue

I've had such a blast selling some of my vintage items on etsy lately and had some fantastic interactions with other vintage lovers through that venue.

Deciding to let go of some of the treasures I've kept hidden in my closet has been oddly invigorating. So much so, I've decided to expand into the realms of selling some of the non-vintage, hardly/never worn items in my closet via eBay.

Here's a preview of what goes up for auction at 2:00 PM Eastern today:

masked

I found this great shop on etsy that sells handmade leather masks. They'd be great for Halloween this year.

Adorable!

I have to get a trampoline for Cinder!

pretty ugly

Saw this picture on Super Fantastic Picture Time today,
and now I need to have this lamby vest thing.

I also really want these boots,
though I know I have enough boots to last me 100 winters....

adidas by Stella McCartney: enough to make me want to take up a sport

you shouldn't wake me a while

Last night was an impromptu good time out in the SoMa neighborhood in BK (South of the Manhattan Bridge). I'd never been there before, and great. Now I'm hooked. Anyway, I'm tired out. Looks like I'll have to put off a few things on the weekend task list I wrote up yesterday.... I'm taking a nap.

Happiness is... Dressing for Oneself

I found this pristine, handmade red silk velvet dress thrifted at Goodwill on E. 23rd for 9.99, two weeks ago (along with the A.P.C. jean jacket revealed earlier on my W_R, and some other great items)!

The insides are as gorgeous as the outside! It has a hot pink grosgrain ribbon reinforcing the crisp pleating...is this an Anna Sui sample from the early 90s, or a 60s tailor-made frock?

I have images burned into my memory from an early 90s Seventeen magazine spread, featuring a young Sophia Coppola, Zoe Cassavettes and Donovan Leitch frolicking around a New York rooftop, wearing a very velvety, 60s music-influenced collection by Anna Sui. I so wanted to be them!

This is the type of dress I knew right off the bat wasn't the boif's style -- and not the style of a lot of people. It's a dress I adore strictly for my own reasons, and wear to please myself. I know it's said a lot in women's mags, etc. that women dress to impress other women, and not men, but there's something to expelling all concern for what other people think and being yourself.

This is Creepy and a Little Sweet...

Portraits of dogs and their owners wearing dog fur sweaters.... I wonder what kind of yarn Cinder's hair would produce? His fur is so short and shiny, it probably wouldn't ply.

Rain Slicker

I've been known to be attracted to the borderline to just plain ugly in footwear. My sister calls my general footwear aesthetic "ladydog". And after shopping with a friend this weekend and slobbering all over these little numbers by Michael Kors, I am officially obsessed. My fate was sealed when I saw the below picture of this graceful lady wearing the chucky, absurd boots with such style on Garance Dore's blog. Aren't they just perfect for a New York fall/winter??

Folks, I NEED these boots!!

Of course, nothing beats a classic....

Mad Men-Inspired Shop Update!

I've added three new items to my etsy shop this evening -- all very Mad Men if you ask me.
Like most people, I really enjoy the clothing on the show, and I happen to own a lot of clothing from the era. What I find really terrific about vintage clothing from this era is that the construction is impeccable, the shapes are very feminine and flattering, and that the separates are incredibly wearable even when paired with contemporary pieces. Case in point, the items pictured above (and just placed in my shop)! I think they work just as well today with a plain black tee and combat boots as they would with a whole vintage outfit.

Sweater Girl

It's no secret that I love fall. It's my favorite time of year. Something about this season inspires me -- the golden sunlight, the spicy scent of leaves and dew, the crispness in the air.... AND I get to wear woolen sweaters! It's been in the mid 50s this last week, and the almost cool enough to break out my knitted goods and coats. I can't wait. But, I must admit, I'm a bit out of practice at dressing for this kind of weather. I've been honing my skills at dressing for high humidity and temperatures in the 90s.

So to prepare myself, here are some of my favorite looks from the fall/winter 08 runway shows:

The luminous sheen of the coats, the pulled-on, carefree fingerless mitts and caps, and gorgeous beryl shades from Burberry Prorsum

The kicky skirts with thigh high boots and chunky but still shapely and femme sweaters at Fendi

Austere color palette, bad ass headgear (three cornered hats!), and the perfect amount of slouch at Marc Jacobs

The vintage 70s look at Dolce & Gabbana, complete with wide wale corduroy
