Strength Hat

I just finished this hat (thanks for the free pattern, Smariek!) for a friend of my boyfriend, who's fighting cancer and in real need of a bone marrow treatment.

We've also joined the Be the Match registry to hopefully save someone's life who is in similar need.

Registering is super easy, and it's a great thing to do.
You can sign up online, and within a few days you'll get a kit in the mail that you send back to the National Bone Marrow Donor Program for them to process to see if you're a match. To complete your kit, all you have to do is swab the inside of your cheek with the provided cotton swabs, seal the kit, and put it in the postage-free envelope. Then, you wait to hear if you're a match for one of thousands of people in need of a life-saving marrow transplant.

Wouldn't it be great to give someone a second chance at life for the holidays this year?

Here's a great video of Joshua and his brother going golfing the day before his bone marrow biopsy. His positivity and sense of humor are really inspiring. Watch!

great seats

We had awesome field level seats at the last Yankees game of the regular season last night! We even got our faces up on the jumbotron.

When I Grow Up

I went to see Fever Ray at Webster Hall with friends on Monday night. The costumes and music were so other worldly -- like characters from a Jim Henson production. It took me away for a little bit.

Persimmon Lunch

Last Friday Tom and I enjoyed a terrific tofu dressing- and cucumber kimchi- making demonstration and a tasting lunch at Persimmon with Chef Youngsun Lee. Some of you might remember that I took a kimchi making course from Youngsun last year at ICE. This was closed lunch service was also one of their offerings, and well worth the money! We indulged in 4 "small plates" (the highlight for me was the deep fried Chinese eggplant in a tofu, lime and Korean miso dressing as well as the salted napa cabbage, radish kimchi and braised pork belly rolls), one large entree each (of course I chose the kimchi jji gae!), a lovely summery dessert of a flan-like ginger tofu in a white wine and honey glaze, and tasted two different rice wines, along with lightly sweet traditional Korean sweet snacks (I'm hooked on the spongy, chewy sweet potato cake!) and an iced roasted barley/corn tea. Delicious! I'll definitely be going back for dinner service soon.

rock opera

Saw the Decemberists last night at Radio City Music hall with some dear friends.
They've come a long way since I'd first seen them at Showbox in Seattle,
playing a show on borrowed instruments
after their UHaul was broken in to and all their equipment was stolen.
They're still just as enjoyable and quirky as before, though I can't really say that for the audience of frat boys at Radio City....

fast times

Tuesday I went to see an old friend's band (my high school sweetheart, actually), Strangefeather, play at the Parkside Lounge in the LES. Along with me was an even older friend (middle school years) and some very new and exciting people. We had a blast! Bill and the band sounded amazing, and we all hopped on their crazy tour bus for a few more songs and tambourine playing after the show. Thanks guys, we had a great time with you!
For any readers in the New York City area, they'll be swinging back through next week to play the Annex on April 21.

Last night was spent laughing with my best women at Flight of the Conchord's Radio City Music Hall performance. I'm a fan of the show, but I gotta say, listening to these guys play their songs live is even more enjoyable. I only wish they'd come out for a third encore to play Bowie in Space....

Bar Crawlin'

At Beast

Last night I enjoyed the company of good friends as we embarked on our first ever Prospect Heights bar crawl. We hit up Franklin Park, Beast, Soda, Barrette, Weather Up and Freddie's and adhered to a strict 2 drinks per establishment rule.
