Gimme 2008, part II
I recently watched the documentary Can't Be Satisfied, and now I MUST learn to play blues guitar. Forget that I once had lessons and felt indignant about the whole thing. This time it's for reals. Especially if someone buys me a vintage 1972 daphne blue Fender Telecaster thinline.

I guess I could also settle for a 1968 pink paisley Tele....

esty excitement!
For months now, I've been keeping a secret.
But now, with freezing temperatures and 40 mph winds blowing off the East River, the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, ice skating at Bryant park, and Starbucks selling a gazillion gingerbread-flavored lattes, it can only mean one thing:
The project has given me the opportunity to collaborate with a fantastic person whose blog I've followed with dedication; it's challenged me creatively to push my designs where I've never gone before; it's required me to keep quite alllllll this time.
And I still can't reveal the surprise!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!
The reason I'm so amped is because I have a special project I've been working on for my etsy shop:

Curious? Watch for an blog update for the shop announcement tomorrow!
Can't wait?

Inspiration: artist from another era

I just spotted this young woman's portrait on Facehunter, and felt inspired. I love her weird, tattered top and shoes; her statement-making, feminine tights; her little nest of hair haloed by earphones; the way she's sitting on the steps -- one antique leather bag strap still on her shoulder; the concentration on her face as she sketches; a glimpse at what she sees on the open sketchbook pages....

Happiness is... Dressing for Oneself
I found this pristine, handmade red silk velvet dress thrifted at Goodwill on E. 23rd for 9.99, two weeks ago (along with the A.P.C. jean jacket revealed earlier on my W_R, and some other great items)!

The insides are as gorgeous as the outside! It has a hot pink grosgrain ribbon reinforcing the crisp pleating...is this an Anna Sui sample from the early 90s, or a 60s tailor-made frock?

I have images burned into my memory from an early 90s Seventeen magazine spread, featuring a young Sophia Coppola, Zoe Cassavettes and Donovan Leitch frolicking around a New York rooftop, wearing a very velvety, 60s music-influenced collection by Anna Sui. I so wanted to be them!
This is the type of dress I knew right off the bat wasn't the boif's style -- and not the style of a lot of people. It's a dress I adore strictly for my own reasons, and wear to please myself. I know it's said a lot in women's mags, etc. that women dress to impress other women, and not men, but there's something to expelling all concern for what other people think and being yourself.
