i recently developed a green thumb when i rescued a gnarly, flowerless orchid plant from the garbage at my place of work. i googled where to trim the stem, repotted it and plopped it in our north-facing window without much hope for regrowth. when we returned from our wedding trip, there was suddenly a new stem shooting out, and now it has 4 fully-opened blossoms and another 5 buds getting ready to shine. my husband bought me two gorgeous staghorn ferns for my birthday, and the man at the nursery gave me a meek-looking orchid to see if i could bring it back to flower too. i've also been reading this book of house plants that i thrifted at goodwill in portland the other year.
